About This Project

Mercer Island Contemporary Patio Located on the peaceful Mercer Island, the ‘Mercer Island Contemporary Patio’ of Studio 342 Landscape Architecture is a dramatic infusion of modern principles into the verdant surroundings. This transformed an under-performing outdoor area into a modern, usable space which compliments its fabulous setting. To achieve a modern aesthetic, we employed quality materials, select concrete pavers and natural stone accents, that provided tasteful contrasts to the natural landscape. The design features an ample seating area suitable for entertaining a large family while offering an intimate setting for quiet evenings under the stars. One of the several challenges was incorporating the patio into the existing landscape while providing proper drainage and preventing water pooling during the forced rains typical to Seattle (or the PNW). Our team developed a subtle grading system along with colorful plantings of native species that enhanced the patio design's aesthetic while positively impacting local biodiversity. Other features include a contemporary fire pit, complete with seating for hosting gatherings, and a built-in kitchen to bring your dining outdoors. Ambient overhead lighting provides comfort and safety, transforming a patio into a usable extension of the home's interior spaces year-round. Overall, the contemporary patio design is a stunning space that exceeds all of the client's expectations, introducing a unique combination of style, usability, and comfort. Studio 342 Landscape Architecture is proud to present this outdoor living space, which expands on the value of the property, while providing a space that enhances the neighborhood life of the owners, family, and their guests, while the city of Mercer Island supports them.
