Tilting Windmill is cytological by way of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Don Quixote was a man whose mind became unbalanced from reading too many tales of heroics found in chivalric legends and determined that he really was an errant knight. On one of his misadventures Don Quixote encounters a set of windmills while doing he and his squire sonran through the Spanish countryside. Once again, due to his insanity, he does not see windmills, but a herd of giants. He goes on to assault the 'giants' (tilting is jousting) and hilarity ensues in 17th-century-pratfall style. In this way, the term 'tilting at windmills' has entered modern parlance as meaning 'fighting imagined foes' — a definition I've never much liked. I have always leaned more toward the romantic definition. Fighting a battle is the equivalent of tilting at windmills (to me). Yet, are we not more noble for the struggle? The same goes for a garden. You've won nothing in the garden - there is no garden to win. A garden is never done. You are dealing with living things in a garden. They grow, take different forms and die, just like living beings. A garden is never finished but there are points in the life of a garden when all is focused and fitting.
