Noto Residence by Richard Kattman Landscape Architecture Located in Wellesley, the Noto Residence illustrates the design and skill of Richard Kattman Landscape Architecture in converting a standard backyard into a stunning outdoor space. This full landscape focused on combining functional outdoor living areas with beautiful nature that fit with the aspirations of the homeowners. The included a planted multi-level terrace using high quality bluestone pavers that created a beautiful and durable surface. In addition, a thoughtfully planned garden encircled the terrace; exhibiting a blend of many kinds of native plantings including hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, and seasonal perennials that bloom from spring into fall for year-round beauty. A major challenge of the was the slope of the site, which created a need for creative solutions to provide usable flat areas in the landscape. Our design team provided the with intelligent solutions using perimeter wall design with locally sourced granite, which provided stabilization in the landscape as well as visual appeal to the design. We also created an effective water drainage system to manage water runoff to preserve the integrity of the garden beds. To improve the experience of the outdoor living spaces, we designed and installed a true ambient lighting system that emphasized the home architecture and illuminated walking paths, providing safety for evenings in the outdoor space. A custom made fire pit shown here surrounded with natural boulders provides a cozy gathering point for family and friends and an integrated water feature offers an ambient sound to the outdoor experience. In the end, the developed into a masterfully crafted landscape that enhanced the original architecture of the Noto Residence while providing an inviting space for relaxation and entertaining. The owners expressed how grateful they were for the rate of appreciation for the quality of their new outdoor space had so much better suited their lifestyle, with the opportunity to share the experience with enjoyment.
