Windrock, by Iris Design Associates Iris Design Associates is excited to share Windrock, a landscape that has transformed outdoor elegance for our client in Northern Virginia. Located in Bealeton, Windrock pushes the limits of nature and a designed space through articulated elements catering to both aesthetics and function. The began with a thorough site evaluation to understand the existing topography and existing plant life. Our team had to develop a to convert a sloped site into an exceptional space that is both a delight to see and comfortably accessible. Using retaining walls built with locally-sourced stone was an effective way to stabilize the slopes without compromising our design as this material adds rustic beauty. Paths were designed to be permeable in order to drain stormwater runoff, while attaching to a designed landscape that fits into a naturally-occurring landscape and, in this case, promoting sustainable landscaping with native plant species. Windrock includes a diverse palette of vibrant native plant species that are durable, easily-maintained, and provide interest throughout the seasons: the bright colors of the coneflowers and the lush green airy foliage of the ferns. Each plant was intentionally located to draw the eye, break up the long look of slope and create a growing experience on site for insects and animals. The aspect of the we particularly enjoyed was including a water feature designed into the backyard, thus providing focal interest while adding the soothing sounds of running water and its value to draw animals and provide/develop a more relaxing place for clients and their guests while they connect to the surrounding environment. In summary, Windrock is authored as an extraordinary outdoor retreat demonstrating our client's incorporated desires.
