Summary: Ocean Highland by Katherine Field and Associates Located along the beautiful coast of Newport, the "Ocean Highland" represents an exceptional combination of beauty and function realized by Katherine Field and Associates. From our home in Newport, we service the communities of Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Narragansett, Newport, Newport East, North Kingstown, Portsmouth, Saunderstown, Tiverton, Boston, and Palm Beach. We absolutely love to design and build custom outdoor spaces that showcase each unique place. The site was carefully designed to complement the existing, extremely sloping coastal topography. Our team selected a striking variety of native plant materials, including seaside goldenrod, beach grass, and several ornamental grasses to create a dramatic impact while serving to increase biodiversity in the area. We built the durable and low-maintenance hardscapes, pathways from reclaimed stone and sustainably sourced hardwood decking. These durable and weather-resistant materials ensure a lasting investment in sustainability. One of the biggest challenges we faced with Ocean Highland was the property’s steepness, as well as added accessibility and visual interest for a tiered garden. Our landscape architects developed a form that funneled water away from the house, while still keeping to the natural slope of the land. They developed a tiers of terraces which appeared to cascade down, with strategically sited boulders to hold soil and give a very natural feel. To provide a lush garden we installed an irrigation system to maintain the greenery needed during the dry months following established planting. The finished product at Ocean Highland is spectacular! The design affords a tranquil outdoor space where a water feature captures the sky and brings wildlife to the site. Inviting seating areas lulled to relax, follow the paths as they wander through the mass planting. All of our efforts resulted not only in a beautiful landscape, but one that blended new and existing features, and established a relationship between the home and the beauty around it. Our delighted client told us the design beautifully blends quality and sustainability to compliment Earth and nature.
