Leeward By Katherine Field and Associates On the exquisite shoreline of Newport, the Leeward by Katherine Field and Associates transforms outdoor spaces, establishing life outdoors. This expansive landscaping converts a small backyard into a coastal sanctuary suitable for relaxation and entertaining. Native plantings are thoughtfully included in the design, taking into account the microclimate of the location while using a combination of ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and other hardy shrubs. A distinctive characteristic of the Leeward is the ornamental stonework throughout the property. Made of locally sourced stone, which was hand-selected, the patio and pathways flow seamlessly through the landscape without sacrificing aesthetics or functionality. Incorporating a custom-designed firepit set, along with seating, invites the family to congregate as they enjoy the stars and hear the waves crash in the distance. A significant challenge that was thoughtfully worked around included a variety of grade changes and rocky terrain throughout this site. The solution Dawson considered included terraces that were made into planting beds. This enhanced the visual appeal, while improving drainage and soil health above this rocky site. This initiative showcases the commitment to sustainable landscapes that Katherine Field and Associates employs while offering the a unique and lovely character. The final choreographed outcome is a symphony of nature and design that satisfies the client, which is a peaceful getaway that evokes the beauty of the sea and an outdoor living experience.
