About This Project

Murphy Residence by Richard Kattman Landscape Architecture Located in the neighborhood of Weston, the Murphy Residence is an artistic and craft-driven landscape by Richard Kattman Landscape Architecture. It converted a traditional suburban yard into a luxurious outdoor living space in a manner that helped integrate with the natural landscape. The new outdoor living space consists of a beautiful variety of amenities, including a custom local stone patio made of bluestone that is perfect for entertaining family and friends. As an integrated element of the design, we constructed a series of tiered gardens that followed the existing topography of the yard using native plants that provide an appeal to biodiversity while maintaining a low maintenance concept. The hardscape was complemented by a path that combined reclaimed bricks that meandered throughout the lush greenery while linking the various outdoor spaces to one another. One of the most difficult challenges that we encountered throughout the was the significant amount of slope on the site. To best accommodate for drainage and accessibility, careful planning and grading took a major role. Our team accomplished this by implementing a sophisticated drainage system that protects the garden while also being visually appealing. The focal point of the landscape is a koi pond, surrounded by flowering plants with fragrances and beautifully placed boulders that allow depth and interest. This has been a favorite place for the homeowner to escape, while also providing a habitat for local wildlife. The finished product has well exceeded the clients' expectations, while giving them an outdoor space that allows them to embrace a lifestyle of color and play. The Murphy Residence serves as an example of Richard Kattman Landscape Architecture's craftsmanship, inventive design ideas and environmental stewardship, and is an impressive addition to our portfolio serving clients in Massachusetts and beyond.
