Garten by Horn & Co. Horn & Co. (previously called JHLA) is pleased to present "Garten", an incredible landscaping designed to enhance outdoor living right in the heart of our service area, including Alexandria, Arlington and Bethesda. Garten is featured in what was a typical suburban backyard is now transformed into a serene oasis incorporating natural beauty with function. The began with an in-depth site analysis revealing the challenging yard topography and sunlight patterns which informed the design. The design incorporated beautiful stone paths made from locally sourced bluestone and invited guests rippling through the lush landscape. We chose a diverse selection of native plants for their hardiness and ease of maintenance, along with including a few stand-outs, of vibrant perennials and ornamental grasses to add many-season interest. One of the site's challenges was contending with severe elevation changes on the site. We designed out of this challenge using new-to-the-client grading solutions to provide proper drainage and longevity to the landscape. We accomplished this by using a tiered planting palette that made the landscape more visually accommodating and provided solutions for erosion. We also added a beautiful patio, made from eco-friendly composite decking with room for entertaining family and friends. Furthermore, we typically call any design "honesty to place" if it can create a calming sound of water with a small pond, running water, and a bubbling fountain which not only enhanced the overall ambiance of the garden environment but also swept in local wildlife. Overall, the final results from Garten were outstanding and the backyard was transformed into a photographic oasis which resembled the client's design ideas and inspiration. The culmination of functional, sustainable yet beautiful outdoor living, has pleased at every turn. Our clients were regularly amazed at how much they enjoy their outdoor space through all four seasons.
